A problem that faces many retail sellers who are either just starting out, or who have been in business for years selling women’s wholesale clothing, only to face a changing market is this : What season should I be buying for?

After all, it’s hard to tell. New York’s Fashion week just showcased their collection of trendy spring clothing. Spring! And it’s not even October yet. So how do you buy for the future, and what do you keep on the shelves now? “Well, it’s a good idea to always have something at the front of the store that matches the weather of the day. Sometimes that means rotating your T racks every day, but in the end, it’s worth it.” Says our in house merchandising specialist.

Another good rule of thumb is to buy for two seasons at once. For instance, now, in October, you should be buying Winter and Spring wholesale clothing. “What about Fall?”, you ask. Well, that’s what should be on your shelves right now! If you’re still struggling under old, unsold summer goods, it’s time to pack them up, or move them out. Going too low on them will be a money drain, when the same goods will sell well next summer with proper storage attention.

If you buy both winter and spring, then your fall wholesale clothing can move to the sales racks when bitter cold hits, and they’ll still sell well enough, as they can be used for under or over layering for winter goods. When spring comes, Fall needs to be totally gone, and the winter goods can go on sale. Even as late as March or April, someone will make an impulse buy of a coat on a blistery day.

Buy in bulk – make sure you carry complete size runs of your products. If you only have size sixteen, but you’re missing out on all the fourteens and eighteens, you’re alienating half your clientèle. Most pre-packed wholesale goods are packed along the ratio that customers actually buy.
